Android 10 Go Introduced; The Latest Operating System Version For Low-end Devices

The latest version of Android is now available for Android Go devices as the Android 10 Go Edition has finally gone live. Designed for light devices, it is nevertheless proper Android, complete with the latest security features.

This includes Adiantum, Android’s security functionality. There are also several updated Go version apps such as YouTube Go, Gallery Go and more. Google has managed to seed up performance on the Android 10 Go by 10% (no puns here!), so even devices with 1GB of RAM will feel everything is a bit faster and snappier.

The new text-to-speech in Android 10 Go Edition

Better yet, functions that previously not available in Android 9 Go is present such as text-to-speech functionality, Google Lens, and more. Many apps are already optimised for Android 10 Go so users will be able to experience the best of Google right out of the box.

Over 500 manufacturers have launched more than 1,600 Android (Go edition) device models to 180+ countries in the past 18 months. So expect better use experience with the new Android 10 Go for these devices.

Over 900 Million Devices on Windows 10 Globally

Microsoft has shared that the company’s Windows 10 operating system is now on over 900 million devices globally. This includes desktops, laptops, Hololens and more.

As an upgrade to the oft-ridiculed Windows 8.1, Windows 10 offers a much more polished interface for both desktop and tablet uses. Launched in 2015, it took only 4 years to have the operating system to be on 900 million devices.

In March, Microsoft announced that windows 10 is on 800 million devices, so the 6-months between announcement growth of 100 million new devices is astounding.

With this growth pattern, we may see the 1 billionth devices with Windows 10 to be announced sometime in the first quarter of 2020, or even earlier.

Google Pixelbook Go Is A Standard Clamshell Laptop

A new leak for Google’s next device has surfaced online, where the next Pixelbook details have been shared. The new Pixelbook, named Go, will not be a 2-in-1 device; instead it will be a standard clamshell laptop with a 13.3-inch 4K display.

The Pixelbook will still be running ChromeOS – so no surprise there. Unlike previous Google’s attempt for the Pixelbook lineup, this will go back to the original design that debuted with the original 2013 model. What is a bit different here is that the leaked design shows softer curves, rather than the harsh box design from back then.

9to5Google shared some preliminary specs for the device: there will be a 16:9, 13.3-inch touchscreen with options for either an FHD or 4K panel – a far departure of the 3:2 screens previously seen on Pixelbook devices. Internally, the new Pixelbook Go can be equipped with Intel’s Core m3, i5, and i7 processors; 8GB or 16GB of RAM; and 64GB, 128GB, or 256GB of storage.

Other features includes USB Type-C (with assumed USB PD charging), and a magnesium-alloy body for a lighter body weight. Google is having an event on October 15, where the Google Pixel 4 series will be announced. The new Pixelbook Go may also be showcased there as well.

Google Play Pass announced; Monthly Subs For Games And Apps On Google Play Store

A new service has been announced for the Android Play Store. The Google Play Pass gives subscribers access to ad-free apps in the apps store as well as sans any in-app purchases.

What makes this service different that Apple’s Acrade is that the Play Pass is for both apps and games, so a flat fee is all you need to get full access to full app support such as Stardew Valley, Monument Valley, Limbo, and Risk for games and AccuWeather/ Hi-Q Recorder for apps.

The new service may change how apps are purchased (or not purchased) in the app store. While apps can still be purchased individually, the presence of a flat-fee subscription service may mean that we may see less paid apps, and more sub-based app plans instead. A Netflix of Play Store in a way.

This may also be a double-edge sword as app developers could get lower revenue from their apps since the flat price structure will mean developers can’t charge higher prices for their apps. We will have to wait and see for this outcome in the near future – if it happens.

Pelan NFCP Malaysia dilancarkan; Sambungan Gigabit Internet dijanjikan

Malaysia’s NFCP plan officially launched; Gigabit internet and more jobs incoming

The Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Ministry (KKMM) has officially launched its official plan for the NFCP or National Fibre and Communication Plan, that aims to increase the internet connectivity of Malaysians.

The 5-year plan aims to give citizens a better internet experience, through seven steps. The infographic by Bernama outlines the plan:

Goodies that we can expect from NFCO includes Gigabit internet to selected industrial areas and capital cities by 2023, fibre connectivity to 70% of schools, hospitals, libraries, police stations and post offices by 2022, a benchmark of 30Mbps to 98% of the population and better mobile connectivity along the Pan Borneo Highway.

The plan looks to be impressive, but it is up to the government to execute and implement the plan as the current government’s track record is not as clean-cut as expected and required. But still, Gigabit internet for all sounds pretty awesome.
